Over the summer of 2009 eight regional workshops were held across the province to pilot one first-draft module in each region. Consumer/survivor groups, provider agencies, mental health system planners and policy makers in Ontario have for years lamented the absence of a common curriculum for peer support training. In March of 2012 we began training another seven trainers, and we look forward to providing them the opportunity to complete their trainer training by co-facilitating classes alongside our original ten.As of Summer 2017, we have eight trainers at our disposal, and have done further trainer skills development work with them, first by requiring them to pass the Peer Support Canada examination and supporting them to complete the PSC certificate, and through regular meetings of a trainer Community of Practice.
An internship is a self-negotiated arrangement to complete 50 hours giving peer support under supervision of a CSI or other mental health program.
The experiential expertise of our peers will shape the mental health system to achieve a valued, recovery-oriented, community-base approach to support. OPDI Peer Support Core Essentials Program Most of our members have a 20+-year track record of providing excellent peer support, and in some cases peer training. Join this webinar, which will share insights gained from an ongoing study called Peer support and Occupational Wellbeing Research (POWeR). We believe OPDI's Peer Support Training & Support from their Staff to ours has led us in many directions.
The training program is constantly updated and improved based on trainers comparing their experiences, staff monitoring participant internship/practicums, and on evaluation surveys that every participant has the opportunity to complete.Since its inception, this training has been provided to more than 600 participants, including some who have traveled from out of province. OPDI Peer Support Core Essentials Program is a basic skills training for people who have recovered their own mental health to the point of being ready to support others on their recovery journey. [ A total of 174 participants, mostly from OPDI member organizations, enrolled in 11 locations, and 140 successfully completed the 50-hour classroom component of Core Skills, to earn their Level 1 or 1R(*) recognitions. In Ontario, a key resource for peer support is the Ontario Peer Development Initiative (OPDI), which is an umbrella organization of mental health Consumer/Survivor Initiatives (CSIs) and peer support organizations across the province of Ontario. "OPDI’s NewsToGo is an invaluable resource. It applies a closer lens to current events and developments that could impact our member organizations and those they serve. OPDI will seek funding and partnership opportunities to develop additional modules and continuing education pieces for specific skills or settings.Proceeding to an internship is optional, but it is required to earn the certificate. As a former policy analyst working in mental health and now a PhD researcher working in the same area, I am kept informed by articles that are interesting and relevant to my work and which I can’t find anywhere else!" The nominee has direct and personal lived experience of mental illness, and has worked in a peer support role either as a paid worker or a volunteer. This allows flexibility so the learner has the information fresh when they are ready to start an internship.Individuals who have completed training receive a signed 1 or 1R document of Recognition, and after successfully completing their internship, an “OPDI Certified Peer Supporter” certificate.
