Well, other useful things to know about this cult-movie: the movie was actually shoot in a small country village near Ferrara, Emilia Romagna, northeastern Italy.
The restorer Stefano (Lino Capolicchio) is hired by the Mayor Solmi (Bob Tonelli) of a small village nearby Ferrara to restore a painting of St. Sebastian, made by the mentally disturbed painter Buono Legnani in the local church. THE HOUSE WITH LAUGHING WINDOWS is a slow but effective horror film that reveals itself a bit at a time - much as the lead character reveals the painting he's commissioned to restore a bit at a time.

I show up at the seven-second mark at the beginning of the film, and I know it's me, not only because I have two slides from the shoot, but because the scars on my knees were faithfully recreated by the (uncredited) artist.
A seminary student, Giacomo Vigetti, is convicted by the Papal State of seducing a young girl.
The film is not a categorical giallo as it is often suggested as being, but rather it's more of a entry into the Gothic horror canon, with a incredibly strong sense of mystery that keeps the viewer intrigued even when the pacing becomes sluggish.
Possibly because it's so slow, methodical and lacks the overt exploitation elements of other gialli, which makes it somewhat unique as far as these films go. 16 out of 37 found this helpful.
Judging by this movie, he was destined for great things but that potential was never fulfilled. Was this review helpful? Considering its strong reputation among exploitation aficionados, this is perhaps the most disappointing movie I've seen this year.

The film is also heavy on atmosphere, artfully directed by the award-winning Pupi Avati (of "The Story of Boys and Girls" and "Incantato" fame), which really intensifies the mystery, making it not only it spellbinding by also horrific and terrifying at times(especially near the end). If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and bump it right on up to the top of your watchlist. The protagonist's maniacal obsession with discovering the "secret" behind the gruesome church frescoe just seemed to come out of nowhere, leaving myself the viewer rather uninvolved. I’ve never seen a dubbed version of this and I think that’s probably a good thing because that voice would never be properly recreated.There’s some beautiful scenery, spooky old houses, strange townsfolk, and an ending that I can’t imagine anyone sees coming on their first watch. The complex storyline and incredibly obscure atmosphere of this film, however, are simply incomparable. And those more apt to independent thinking will also be around to let the rest of the world know how dull, unengaging and monotonous this is. The image is an example of a ticket confirmation email that AMC sent you when you purchased your ticket. There are crumbling buildings, swamps, and canals enshrouded in fog; demented characters; disappearing corpses; and a secret burial site. The scene is shot in a series of close-ups in a fuzzy monochrome. Your Ticket Confirmation # is located under the header in your email that reads "Your Ticket Reservation Details". Of course those clinging to the hope they'll be part of some exclusive group by claiming this film is some rediscovered "masterpiece" when it's clearly not, will forgive its massive flaws just to join the little club. While this is a quite atypical example for Giallo, it is doubtlessly one of the most original films this great sub-genre has ever brought forth.
