Fetch The Bolt Cutters [Explicit]
Originally released in May 1989, The Stone Roses is often cited as THE greatest album of all time. Having listened to it five or six times I am convinced that there is no weak song here. Routinely named as the greatest British album of the past 20 years in British music mag polls, sometimes rivaling such sacred cows as Revolver whenever those publications decide to do a Greatest Albums Ever list, The Stone Roses remains one of those classic albums that somehow defies translation across the pond. But in 1989, it was still New Order and especially Simply Red who were selling all the records. The unlikeliest band to succeed, The Stone Roses, had the most devout followers – 15-22 year old Mancunians, forged from the warehouse parties of the mid 80s where any minor could get in with a ticket and drink beer all night. The Stone Roses had to do the warehouse parties concocted by Steve Adge, their tour manager of 30 years and counting, because they couldn’t get gigs anywhere. The sorry thing is I think she thinks she’s bucking us all up or something, easing our collective passage through dark times or some other such nonsense, but to be perfectly frank she’s driving me up the wall.
Every sound bite a provocation. They’d tied in with Howard Jones and Lindsay Reade, the ex-wife of Tony Wilson, so were more or less blackballed media-wise and gig-wise in Manchester. To exacerbate things further, they then went and sprayed graffiti with their band’s name on every monument around Manchester, which pushed them even further out on the fringes.Their debut single didn’t reflect how good they were live and by the time their second single, Any other band facing what The Stone Roses faced in their home town would have packed it in but, as the old saying goes, when the going gets weird the weird turn pro.So The Stone Roses accepted the peculiar management style of Gareth Evans and became the resident band at the International 2 in Manchester and the word of mouth and the love of the kids just grew and grew. They’d been knocking about since 1984 and had always exuded a fierce ambition and determination on stage. It’s little Jacintha (18) that’s the problem (apart from the wife, of course, Janet, but she does one’s nut at the best of times, what with her voice, her incessant chuntering, her face, her taste in clothes, her ‘cooking’, I could go on...). What a find! I am currently being all the albums that have had an impact on me over the course of my life. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote. Utterly brilliant. Much better than my original press, which I stupidly lent to someone.
I have had this album on CD for a very long time so thought it was about time I got it on vinyl especially as it is the 30th anniversary of this amazing album by one of Britain’s seminal band.
