Saluda is a beautiful small town filled with interesting shops and galleries. And we were looking forward to our visit to the Purple Onion. Decided we needed coffee and maybe a snack - we hit the jackpot! Tried to eat a piece and it was a no go. I found this a bit of a double standar, because they would allow you to stay at the bar if you ordered a drink but not if you were just waiting for a table? Waitress never commented on the deconstructed mess left over. Seems very overrated. These Sunday concerts don’t follow any set schedule—except being on a Sunday, of course. Menu has a very unique flair and food was absolutely delicious. So I carefully read the menu, and when it said " a sauce of tomato", I figured I was golden.
We take pride in our exceptional service so I always hate to hear when we failed on our end. Wife had the trout bagette - smelled old, fishy, and was tough. What came out was a pizza that essentially had no sauce whatever on it, and a very generous layer of cut up tomatoes that had been very lightly cooked. First, this place is wheelchair accessible.

They have a wonderful variety of refreshing beverages. The ingredients were fresh and delicious.Our first time to the Purple Onion and what an unexpected gem in a small mountain town! We had a little time to spare so we decided to stop at this subway. The food and service(Risa K?) Outdoor dining area is inviting and relaxing - even after mods to accommodate covid19 requirements. The staff are all real friendly. The little town of Saluda is very dog friendly, but I’m not sure if they are allowed in the restaurant due to laws, but as the weather warms and the patio is opened up, they may be allowed on the patio. I like tomato/pizza sauce, paste, ketchup, etc.- no ill effects. Neat, clean and tidy. I am not sure if "Mountain Chic" is a term yet, but this might fit the bill.We expected better, based on the reviews we saw. But our service was very very slow! Not much meat. Minus side- waitress harried and not attentive; slamming condiments on to the table on the way by without a word, no eye contact, rebuffed attempts at human interaction. And they have great music too!Great place to eat in a great little town.
