SALLE: There are so many different ways to talk and think about art. But there is a sense that the artist is a political candidate, and this candidate is being put forward, and they are meant to represent us.

It has not much relevance to the world of conceptual art, but it’s what I refer to almost every day.

You’re sort of looking without actually engaging in one piece more than another.SALLE: No one’s quite figured out how to make the images come to the viewer.

SALLE: No, I don’t think we do. CLINE: You write about giving viewers the autonomy to respond in an individual way.

This next comment is more of the cranky kind, but when I first came to New York, I knew some painters older than myself. Artist David Salle sits in a vintage Wim Rietveld chair at his East Hampton, New York, studio with three recent paintings. Does it do what it’s supposed to be doing in an efficient way?
