They were just running around using the open space to burn energy. There were school kids on a class trip running around while we were there. Would have been nice if there was a proper café rather than just drinks served in the great hall. He also enjoyed the interactive "battle" display. This castle could be a major attraction but instead its an epic waste of time. Sadly not enough information boards to tell us about the castle. Excellent time hunting dragons, friendly and helpful staff. The have an oddly placed dragon pit with static dragon heads that blow a bit of smoke with an audio track that runs for a couple of minutes. Since then, we have been working hard to reopen our collection of staffed sites and we’re pleased to confirm that this will begin, in a phased approach, from August onwards. There is always something new to see. It is all part of a proposed £570,000 investment in attractions at the castle to mark its 750th anniversary year. This proved too much for grandad who waited on a lower level.
My three year old loved it!We visited the castle with our grandson who really liked seeing the Dragon. All in all though a generally pleasant trip for all.
So, if you are visiting, I would recommend that you search out the car park near the Information Office.We decided to go here as a three generations group with two children 15 and 3. Ticketed entry at selected castles, abbeys and ironworks will begin in August.
Dragon having broken through the banks of Caerphilly Castle Credit: Cadw St David's Day might seem like the perfect time to visit Wales' largest castle. Even though the castle looks fantastic in its setting and the entry price is not too bad for what you get to see, there was a very clear lack of any sort of interpretation or explanation of the history of the place. As you enter the town (where the W H Smith could not accept my voucher for 'The Times', you are directed to a car park which is in fact as far away from the entrance to the castle as you could plan, especially when, as in my case, you had an injury problem with your legs. Missing a trick with no cafe, but town very close.The good citizens of Caerphilly have a sense of humour. The only staff to be found in this huge castle were at the front door taking your money, and in the cafe. There were lots of doors to explore in and out and a climb to the roof. :) Only a ruin really but it's lovely to walk around and imagine what it would have been like. Towards the end we saw other children with trail finding activities, but we weren’t offered these and didn’t think to ask. Maze was a little disappointing as not really a maze, but interesting things to find. Tickets were £6 which was probably a bit steep given its just a ruin when you compare that to tickets for full on castles, but still worth a visit. In a poor attempt to provide activity they have pegged in a large temporary chess board with pieces for people to move around. We hoped that there would be something for everyone and we were not disappointed. The dragons are amazing. Great place, reasonable entrance fees and brilliant in the morning before it gets too crowded. You can read the plaque at the front door and know everything they can tell you even before you walk through the main gate. Dragon was interesting .Waste of time. Not at all. Had to carry 3yo. For a huge castle that is the largest in Wales, the castle is room after room after room of empty space, not even a plaque to tell you what the room may have been, no chairs, no tables, nothing. With guidance from Welsh Government, we began to reopen our unstaffed, outdoor monuments at the beginning of July.. For them it was literally an outdoor gym class.
