This is a "what would you do" movie. Her very presence is causing chaos as people jump into the water and drown. This real-world problem will shake Rike to her core. Ascension contains a natural jungle planned and fostered by Charles Darwin. When the movie started first we see a strong educated woman. A taut moral thriller, “Styx” is a story of what happens when self-reliance runs into other people’s desperation. What you would do if you should to chose between saving life of your own, life of two people or lives of many people? The principal actress of this movie has obviously done a course in "how to act in arthouse movies": show a face of stone for two hours straight. But when she runs into a sinking ship full of refugees, with a boat too small to help them, the film morphs into a morality play. Including setting up a yacht. A storm interrupts her journey and when it has passed she spots a trawler adrift, overloaded with distressed people. Not many actors in this movie but Susanne Wolff did a good job playing her character. There is nothing to laugh about in this horrible world full of sexists and bad people. At the end, the rescuers arrive and save both of them! The calmness, the solitude, the awareness of everything that surrounds you, it seems all normal to me that this story is told in a slow pace. This is an outstanding film and awesome performance by the beautiful Susanne Wolff. I had the impression in the first half that I'm watching a documentary. You won't be thanked and you could end up dead." In the last cinamatic it abruptly ended with Styx and Darlak (or whoever) at a standoff and then credits. Was this review helpful? We're living in a me me me-world and Styx reflects that totally. Strong directed by Wolfgang Fischer. "Styx" depicts the transformation of a strong woman torn from her contented world during a sailing trip. Story idea was very topical but didn't work in this film. I have got to also add that it takes the immigrant crisis to a sensitive level. Was this review helpful? she loads groceries, okay we get it !) She is educated, confident, determined and committed. Contacting the Coastguard she is told that help will be dispatched and to keep away from the trawler as her yacht is too small to assist those onboard. Only after that I started to foresee what it's happening and I realized that actually it's fiction. Adrift on the river Styx. Barely intense scene is, the African boy "Kingsley" she rescue from a overboard ship, pull her down from the boat! Susanne Wolff gives a fine performance here as Rake, an emergency room doctor who sets off alone onto the sea, on her sailing yacht, to head towards the isolated Ascension Island, in the South Atlantic. The MVP here is Wolff, who superbly etches emotional disintegration alongside amazing physical prowess. As for the moral of the story it's something typical for our times, we look at refugees as they are a plague and not worth of our time, and this while they are human beings like you and me. As turnout, this film is about Rike make a sailing trip to Ascension Island!
She doesn't need any men. Then the sailing. Rike--40, a doctor from Europe--embodies a typical Western model of happiness and success.
The follows the moral drama, should I take refugues on board or not? She straddles the border to the underworld on the River Styx. That's it!
A good job of Wolfgang Fischer. Not enough closure of loose ends. The film only has one flaw...many scenes were longer than they should be and some scenes unnecessary and long scenes like the intro with the monkeys, the crash and when she´s aiding the boy, to mention a few. 1 out of 4 found this helpful. None will come to save hundreds. 710067)Doctor Rike (Susanne Wolff) flies to sun-kissed Gibraltar to singlehandedly pilot a yacht to the Ascension Island between Africa and Brazil. It might be a bit slow but that's exactly what I would imagine if I was on a solitary trip sailing the oceans. But, the most successful thing in this movie, is the cinematography, those marine landscapes that cut your breath.
