(He would participate in several campaigns culminating on Peleliu where is was one of 11 Marines out of his original company to walk off the island.)

With names of individuals he interacted with and where they came from. The book was written as a memoir Richard Tregaskis, a war correspondent for International News Service, in the form of a daily journal. It was written as soon as the author left Guadalcanal, 9 months after Pearl Harbor, so the author didn’t have the benefit of hindsight yet to know what this pivotal invasion meant in the grand scheme of the Pacific war.
Richard Tregaskis gives a clear view of his experience of the battle and for a press correspondent seems to have had tremendous bravery to see things "from the front". Tregaskis' later works would become military apologist pieces, but Guadalcanal stands on its own. For instance, other events in the Solomons Campaign occur, but the fog of war is present in this writing, so the various naval engagements are written with an air of uncertainty.Guadalcanal Diary is a non-fiction diary of Richard Tregaskis's experience on Guadalcanal as a news correspondent. He was a volunteer, and knew what he was getting into, but still was up to the challenge of war. This book is as close to as new as a 76 year old book could possibly be expected . Rather, the book is written as a description of what it was like to be involved in the on-going struggle. This book does have his picture in it, I am sure my brother will enjoy it. This book is considered a model of war reporting by later military journalists and writers. And for that it is powerful and well worth reading.Go into this book understanding it is a product of its time. It sounds trite, but the effects of war, the mark it leaves on the those who fight it, is always more interesting to me than the mechanics of combat or tactics. It may not be the definitive book on Guadalcanal, but it is very readable.A boring, repetitive slog. This book is a good read if you would like to learn more about soldier life, and what happened on Guadalcanal.
