As someone who doesn't generally like historical fiction I was happy to enjoy this book.Really, this book deserves 3.5 stars, but since that isn't an option I was generous.

Like watching a silent film, The Red Scarf is a book of few words. The characters were so completely blank that it seemed impossible that the writer gave birth to them. The 'magic' thing didn't work for me, I understood maybe why it was there, as gypsies are a big part of most cultures histories, & they were big in this time period so they fit & give easy excuses for 'mysterious occurences' I loved most of the main characters, wanted to spank/slap a few(have to say I'm peturbed by the lack of info of what happened to Yuri after) anyway, I still managed to really like this book & read it whenever I could.This is a by-the-numbers shameless attempt to cash in on a horrifying episode in our recent past, using all the current popular cliches.
